Careers and Work-Related Learning

Careers education is part of the whole curriculum throughout the age ranges at Baginton Fields School. Our teaching is geared towards transferable life and social skills so that all our students can take up a fulfilling role in society when they leave school. We teach important communication and social skills throughout the curriculum and aim for our students to learn the maximum possible independence, choice, control, decision making and negotiation skills. Social and independent living skills are a particularly important focus of our PSHECC curriculum. Mathematics, English and ICT/Computing teaching emphasises application of skills learnt in everyday circumstances and leads towards functional skills qualifications. We have an ambitious and broad curriculum that has high aspirations and introduces our students to a wide range of learning experiences to enable them to realise where their talents and interest lie. The whole curriculum is based on practical application of skills learnt, this includes opportunities to apply these skills in the wider community context. Enterprise projects are popular with students throughout school, they bring together learning about organisational and social skills, applying them to tangible and creative situations and then using English, mathematics and ICT/Computing to solve real life problems. Getting to decide how the profit will be spent is an added motivation.  

In Key Stage 3, students follow the New Horizons programme which is accredited by ASDAN, this PSHECC programme covers various aspects of career’s education. As students get older, and move through school, careers education and work related learning become more focused on opportunities once students leave Baginton Fields School. The curriculum for our most able students leads towards an ASDAN qualification in Employability, this covers such areas as job opportunities, work standards, customer service, health and safety, rights and responsibilities, working and communicating with others. Work experience is an important part of employability, giving a vital chance for students to put their learning into practical situations. Students can complete work experience within various job roles in school, for example administration, site service officer, lunchtime supervisor, handyman and ICT technician. Some students are further challenged by work experience outside the school environment, recent examples have included an older person’s home, a children’s nursery, a café, a leisure centre and with a builder.  In Key Stage 5 work related learning covers the areas of horticulture, animal care, retail, health and beauty, singing, creative industries, catering, sewing and carpentry. Students get the choice of these areas of learning so that they can spend time developing their skills in a particular area. The community application of the Key Stage 5 curriculum is a very strong thread and to this end all students have access to the ASDAN Personal Progress and Personal and Social Development qualifications. Travel training is part of this curriculum. 

When we are clear as to the desired destination of our students once they have left Baginton Fields School then we support the student in transition activities to ensure a smooth move to the next stage of their life whether that be social care day opportunities, college or supported internship.
